Wenchang shares Bo'ao's seasons: the south monsoon from March to August, at its best from April to June, and the north-east monsoon from October.

Where to ride

  • Gaolong Bay (高隆湾): Sheltered, with mild waves and no hidden rocks. The beaches are wide enough to lay out lines of 20 metres and more, which makes it one of the best beginner spots on the island.
  • Quiet coast north of Bo'ao: Away from the resort towns the beaches are empty, so there is room for lessons and for long downwinders.

Conditions

Wenchang is not a tourist area, so the beaches are empty and there's room for everyone. It shares Bo'ao's long season, with summer sea breezes and the winter monsoon.

Getting there

Wenchang is about an hour's drive north of Bo'ao. We arrange the transport when we head there.

Lessons and trips

We take students and riders to Wenchang when the conditions there are better than in Bo'ao, and can arrange overnight trips.

Local tips

  • A good choice for beginners when Bo'ao is crowded or choppy.
  • Wenchang is also home to the rocket launch site and famous for Wenchang chicken, so there's plenty to do on a no-wind day.
