FAQ
Before you come
Who runs Kitesurf China?
A kiteboarding school and shop on Hainan Island, founded in 2012 by David “Chen”, from England, and run together with Nick Ning.
Which languages do you teach in?
English, German and Chinese.
Are the instructors qualified?
Yes. Our instructors are IKO certified at different instructor levels. See the Team page.
What is the IKO, and why get certified?
The International Kiteboarding Organization sets the training standard used by schools worldwide. Certified students get an IKO card showing their level, which lets you continue at, or rent from, IKO centres around the world.
What equipment do you teach on?
Current Slingshot kites and boards. Every student also gets a helmet, life jacket and impact vest, plus boots at spots with pebbles.
Where are you based?
Bo'ao, on Hainan's east coast. When Bo'ao has no wind we take you to other spots on the island.
How do I get to Bo'ao?
The easiest way is to fly straight into Bo'ao's own airport, Qionghai Bo'ao International (BAR), which has direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai and other mainland cities and is about 30 minutes from the beach. Alternatively, fly to Haikou or Sanya and take the high-speed train to Bo'ao, about an hour from either. We can arrange your pickup from the airport or station; ask for a quote.
How far ahead should I book?
Contact us at least a week before you plan to come, so we can check the wind forecast and plan your days.
Can you help with accommodation?
Yes. Bo'ao has places to stay for every budget, many within walking distance of the beach. Tell us your dates and we'll recommend somewhere that suits you.
Why Hainan?
Wind nearly all year, the warmest water in China and some of the best kite spots in Asia. You won't need a wetsuit in winter, but you'll need sun cream all year.
